Hydrology is that branch of geology that studies water on the earth and
in the atmosphere.
I have always loved nature and have done lots of camping and hiking in the Western USA
where these activities were accessible to amateurs. One
of the things that has always fascinated me is the presence of sea
fossils even on mountains. It always brings to my mind the
biblical account of the great Flood that covered all the mountains of
the earth (Gen 7:19). Now I can hear the sneers, and the wonder
how any intelligent person could be so ill-informed as to believe the Flood
"myth" in the Bible. But I believe it. Look at it this way:
If a person believes in the resurrection of Christ, then the Flood is
nothing in comparison! Unashamedly, I fully confess that I believe the Bible is the
Word of God.
Now please consider the
understandings of the Water Cycle as found in the OT:
Ecclesiastes 1:7 (ESV)
7 All streams run to the sea, but the sea
is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.
Job 36:27-28 (ESV)
27 For he draws up the drops
of water; they distill his mist in rain, 28
which the skies pour down and drop
on mankind abundantly.
Job 38:16 (ESV)
16 “Have you entered into the springs
of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?
Amos 5:8 (ESV)
8 He who made the Pleiades and
Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning and darkens the
day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours
them out on the surface of the earth, the
Lord is his name;
Amos 9:5-6 (ESV)
5 The Lord
God of hosts, he
who touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it
mourn, and all of it rises like the Nile, and sinks again, like
the Nile of Egypt; 6 who
builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault
upon the earth; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours
them out upon the surface of the earth— the
Lord is his name.
Now please consider the following USGS diagram that depicts the
Water Cycle.
1 (Because the following USGS figure is in
PNG-25 format, no all internet browsers may be able to view it.
However, you may be able to view it at the Wikipedia article.)
Note that all elements of the diagram, including the underground water
making its way to come up from the ocean floor ("springs of the sea")
are all present and accounted for in the OT.
The person credited with the modern concept of the Water Cycle
is Bernard Palissy in the 16th century A.D.
2. However,
it is clear from the OT references above that the elements of the Water
Cycle were already known at least 1400 years before Christ.
Again, this appears to be another example of scientific foreknowledge in
the Bible.
